"oneLine": "Answers the open question of Balazi, Allaire, Jolivet and Omnes: no fifteen quintics complete a fourth-order moment-based Stokes element on tetrahedra, because the 50 moments satisfy a hidden relation on all quintics; one sextic repairs it, and for every order degree n+2 misses exactly (n−1)(n−2)/2 directions while degree n+3 always works.",
"abstract": "Nonconforming finite elements for slow viscous (Stokes) flow are often specified by moments: averages of the velocity against polynomials on each face and inside each cell. Balazi, Allaire, Jolivet and Omnes (Numerical Methods for PDEs, 2025) built tetrahedral elements of second and third order this way and left open whether a fourth-order element can be obtained by adding fifteen quintic polynomials to the quartics. This paper shows that it cannot: an alternating face functional vanishes on every quintic but equals 1/34650 on the Vandermonde sextic of the barycentric coordinates, so the 50 moments are dependent on all quintics, and that one sextic repairs the defect, giving a 50-dimensional element independent of vertex numbering. For face moments of degree n and cell moments of degree n−1, the polynomials of degree n+2 invisible to all moments form a seven-dimensional space with an explicit basis of Jacobi and Legendre ridges for every n. Hence degree n+2 suffices only for n=1,2; for n≥3 exactly (n−1)(n−2)/2 moment directions are missing and degree n+3 is necessary and sufficient, for single-cell polynomial spaces containing all polynomials of degree n+1. Numbering-free elements with the fewest top-degree functions are proved to exist for every n, given explicitly for n=4,5 and checked for an explicit family up to n=8. On triangles no extra degree is ever needed; on higher-dimensional simplices sufficiency of degree n+3 is conjectured beyond checked cases. A numerical Stokes test shows rates consistent with fourth-order convergence, with computed discrete inf-sup values 0.40–0.37 on four meshes. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
