  "title": "Sharp variance ordering for rotating Gaussian samplers",
  "shortTitle": "Rotation helps every observable exactly when friction is at least √2",
  "url": "https://evidencepress.org/releases/rotating-gaussian-variance-ordering/",
  "oneLine": "Rotation helps every observable exactly when friction is at least √2 — and what happens below it: for kinetic Langevin samplers of a Gaussian target, a target-preserving rotation never increases the long-run variance of any square-integrable position average if and only if the friction is at least √2.",
  "abstract": "A Markov chain sampler estimates an average from one long trajectory, and its accuracy is the long-run (asymptotic) variance of that time average. Adding a deterministic rotation that preserves the target (a nonreversible perturbation) is known to help every observable for overdamped Langevin samplers. For kinetic, or underdamped, Langevin samplers, which carry a momentum and a friction γ, Duncan, Nüsken and Pavliotis (2017) proved a local improvement for linear and quadratic observables of a Gaussian target when γ > √2 and conjectured it for every square-integrable observable. This candidate proves a global form of that conjecture: with matched position and momentum rotations, every square-integrable position observable has a long-run variance that never increases with rotation strength if and only if γ ≥ √2, the endpoint included. The mechanism is that the oscillator power spectrum is single-peaked exactly when there is no resonance, rotation shifts the spectrum, and convolution keeps single peaks single. The literal second-derivative form holds exactly on an explicit class containing all polynomials, while rough observables have sharper cusps. Below the threshold, even observables still improve at every rotation, only finitely many odd Hermite degrees can be hurt, and one finite rotation strength improves every observable. The paper also gives sharp large-rotation rates, a matrix criterion Γ³ − ΓK − KΓ ⪰ 0 for noncommuting stiffness and friction with least safe friction (2K)^{1/2}, a two-replica construction for arbitrary Gaussian targets, and shows that fixed horizons and regular sampling can reverse the ordering while Poisson sampling preserves it. Everything concerns exact stationary Gaussian dynamics; nothing is claimed about discretised integrators, cost or an optimal friction. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
