"oneLine": "Under the regularity conditions of Xie, Zhu and Shishkin (2025), no range of small sample sizes guarantees that one pooled empirical price beats segmented empirical pricing, for any number of markets.",
"abstract": "A seller with a small sample of past buyers can post one price chosen from the whole sample (pooled empirical revenue maximisation) or split buyers into markets by a covariate and price each market separately. Xie, Zhu and Shishkin (Theoretical Economics, 2025) showed that segmentation learns more slowly and asked whether there is a finite range of sample sizes, with lower endpoint at least three, on which pooled pricing beats every segmented rule for every distribution in their regularity class. This candidate shows that the regularity conditions alone do not guarantee such a range. For every number of markets K and every finite upper sample size N, one atomless distribution satisfying the conditions makes K-market pricing (with empty markets priced at the pooled price) strictly more profitable at every sample size from 2 to N, with an explicit positive bound. Combined with a distribution on which segmentation wins in large samples, this gives two fixed distributions in one fixed regularity class that defeat pooled dominance at every sample size; for two markets the threshold is explicit. The mechanism is a rare high-value segment: one high observation pulls a pooled price up and loses ordinary buyers. The provable constructions use extreme constants and tiny gains; an exploratory simulation shows relative gains up to about ten per cent at moderate parameters. The question with moderate constants fixed in advance remains open. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
