"oneLine": "As a PageRank walker's weight for stepping straight back is turned up, a vertex score can fall and then rise again, so two cheap scores cannot tell which side the expensive non-backtracking score lies on; a five-vertex house graph refutes Conjectures 3.1 and 3.2 of Glover, Jones, Kempton and Oveson (2026).",
"abstract": "PageRank scores the vertices of a network by a random walk that occasionally restarts. A walk with memory can weight an immediate return along the edge just used by a parameter μ: μ = 0 forbids returns (non-backtracking PageRank), μ = 1 is ordinary PageRank and μ → ∞ makes the walk bounce on one edge, where the score has a cheap closed form. Glover, Jones, Kempton and Oveson (Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2026; arXiv:2211.13353v2) conjectured that every vertex score is monotone in μ and that the spread of scores is monotone too; if true, the ordinary and infinite-backtracking scores would show which side of ordinary PageRank the non-backtracking score lies on. This candidate shows that both clauses of their Conjecture 3.1 fail. On the five-vertex house graph with uniform restart and damping ε = 1/2, the roof vertex has π₀ = 638/3615, π₁ = 22/125 and π∞ = 8/45: both endpoints lie above the middle value, so the score dips and recovers and the shortcut points the wrong way. An exact cubic formula classifies every damping value: the roof is monotone exactly when ε ≤ ε_c ≈ 0.2407. Among graphs of minimum degree two, five vertices is the smallest order for every damping value (the house and the gem); with leaves allowed the four-vertex paw already fails for ε in (0, ε₁) ∪ (ε₂, 1), where four is then the smallest order, and even a five-vertex tree fails. A certified exact census of all 995 connected graphs on two to seven vertices, at five damping values, finds a nonmonotone vertex in 675 of the 853 seven-vertex graphs for some listed damping value. Both readings of the spread clause also fail, even when the extreme vertices are unique. A two-step criterion explains which vertices dip at small damping, and an exact slope formula at ordinary PageRank gives cheap sufficient tests. Exact invariance under backtracking holds if and only if P²v = v, and the degree-tail Conjecture 3.2 fails, in its local-weak-convergence reading, for every tail index above one. Numerical experiments find 10–41% of vertices nonmonotone on standard networks, with small excursions and stable rankings. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",

"Cheap partial substitute: a small-damping two-step criterion and an exact formula for dπ/dμ at μ = 1 give three sufficient endpoint tests; at ε = 1/2 they detect 285 of the 478 nonmonotone census vertices of minimum degree two (proof; exact check).",
