"oneLine": "At or below the tipping point R0 = 1, the average infection level in the standard network SIS model never fades more slowly than 1/(1+t), whatever the network — proving two 2024 conjectures — but exactly at the tipping point network shape matters: the same epidemic takes about 920 recovery times to fall below 0.1% on a small-world network and about 40 on a spatial one.",
"abstract": "When an infection spreads through a network of contacts but is not quite strong enough to persist, how fast does it die out, and does the network's shape matter? For the N-intertwined mean-field (NIMFA) model of susceptible–infectious–susceptible (SIS) epidemics, the most widely used deterministic network model of a recurring infection, Persoons, Sensi, Prasse and Van Mieghem (2024) conjectured from simulations a universal speed limit: at or below the epidemic threshold, the average infection level y(t) is at most 1/(1+t), with time in mean recovery times, whatever the network and starting state; and the excess over the endemic level above the threshold, starting from above, obeys the same bound. This candidate proves both conjectures, the second with a sharper prefactor, by applying Jensen's inequality to the classical Volterra-type function h(s) = −s − log(1 − s). The same argument covers time-varying networks, node-dependent recovery and, with Perron weights, directed networks, and via a known correlation inequality it bounds the expected prevalence of the exact stochastic SIS process with a common recovery rate. Regular networks attain the limit. Exactly at the threshold the average decays like κ(G)/t, where κ(G) ≤ 1 is an explicit constant of the leading eigenvector, equal to 1 only for regular graphs. On standard synthetic networks of 1,000 nodes κ ranges from about 0.9 (small-world, random) to about 0.04 (spatial, scale-free), so the same R0 = 1 epidemic falls below 0.1% after about 920 recovery times on a small-world network but about 40 on a spatial one; a small κ signals a persistent infected core rather than easy elimination, and individual nodes can exceed the population limit by a factor of order n^(1/3). For the timescale-separation question that motivated the conjectures, the candidate gives unconditional transition-time bounds and shows numerically that one growth estimate of the 2024 paper is not a general bound away from R0 → 1. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
