"oneLine": "Answering Bai and Li's open question: under uniform global dispersal, total population can have any number of peaks as the dispersal rate varies — the peaks are real but tiny, so the result is qualitative.",
"abstract": "How does the total size of a population depend on how often its members move? In the standard model where individuals leave their location at a fixed rate and resettle anywhere in the habitat with equal probability, Bai and Li (2021) proved that total equilibrium population has a single peak as the dispersal rate varies whenever habitat quality varies by less than a factor of about 1.618, and asked whether several peaks are possible. This candidate shows that they are, in any number. For every N there are smooth, strictly increasing resource functions with any prescribed mean, converging to a constant in every finite L^p, whose population curve has at least N distinct strict local maxima; the mechanism is that a tiny patch of very rich habitat barely changes average quality but adds a population bump at a dispersal rate comparable to its richness. Two resource levels always give exactly one peak, so three is the minimum: an exact three-level example (values 1/20, 25/12, 329/10) has a certified minimum at d = 3, and a second three-level example with contrast about 14.17 is certified exactly and by two rigorous interval traps. The peaks are real but tiny: in the 14.17 example the left maximum lies within 1e-4 of the minimum and is about 1e-32 high, and it vanishes under tiny parameter changes. The result is qualitative. Two close sources (Liang and Zhang 2021; Bai, Li and Shi 2024) were read only as abstracts, so priority is stated within a bounded search. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",

"Any number of peaks: for every a > 0 and N ≥ 1 there are smooth, strictly increasing resources with mean a, converging to a in every finite L^p but not uniformly, whose total population has at least N distinct strict local maxima in the dispersal rate (Theorem 1, proof).",
"Mechanism: rare atoms of very rich habitat add separated first-order bumps ε r⁻² g_r(d), peaking near d ≈ r/2; each bump gives a population trap that survives the nonlinear problem, smoothing and normalisation (Lemmas 10–12).",
    "Exact example: resource 1/20, 25/12, 329/10 on fractions 2405/3504, 5/16, 1/876 has M(3) = 1, M′(3) = 0 and M″(3) = 6042635/1975192401 > 0, hence two strict maxima; smooth L¹-close increasing versions keep two maxima but not the exact identities (Theorem 2, exact certificate).",
"Two levels are always single-peaked, with the peak at d = (a + b)/2, so three levels are minimal (Theorem 3, proof).",
"Low-contrast example: contrast ≈ 14.1734 with two strict maxima, certified exactly and by two interval traps; the optimal three-level contrast lies in [1.618, 14.1734] (Proposition 4).",
"Effect sizes are tiny: the first peak of the exact example rises about 7.6 × 10⁻⁴ above the dip; in the 14.17 example the left peak lies within 10⁻⁴ of the dip, is about 10⁻³² high and vanishes under tiny parameter changes. The result is qualitative."
