  "shortTitle": "Migration can switch a population above and below capacity five times",
  "url": "https://evidencepress.org/releases/logistic-biomass-crossings/",
  "oneLine": "Answering a 2022 question: in the logistic patch model, three patches allow exactly five switches between migration helping and harming total biomass, not three; n patches allow between n + 2 and 2ⁿ − 3. The effects are a few parts per million.",
  "abstract": "When habitat patches are linked by migration, the total equilibrium population B can end up above or below the sum S of the patches' carrying capacities: migration can help or harm the population as a whole. As the overall migration intensity β grows, B can switch between these two states several times. In the standard logistic patch model with an arbitrary irreducible, conservative (possibly asymmetric) migration network, Elbetch, Benzekri, Massart and Sari (2022) found three switches with three patches and asked for a proof that three is the maximum, and for bounds with more patches. This candidate answers both. Three is not the maximum: for three patches the exact maximum is five, shown by an explicit rational example with five transverse crossings certified in exact arithmetic and a direct algebraic proof that six are impossible. For n patches there are at most 2ⁿ − 3 crossings unless B is identically S, with no genericity assumption, and for every n ≥ 3 there are networks with at least n + 2; an exact four-patch certificate gives six. So the maximum is 1 for two patches, 5 for three and between 6 and 13 for four. The five-crossing example also has at least three separate peaks of total biomass. The effects are tiny, at most a few parts per million between crossings, and the example needs finely tuned migration rates; the results describe what the model allows, not observations. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
