"oneLine": "A three-unit example, observable and controllable, makes the isolated Kalman filter's reported variances grow at least like (5/4)(9/5)^k while the ordinary Kalman filter stays at or below 3/4, refuting its authors' conjecture that the reported covariance always settles to a unique steady state.",
"abstract": "Teams of robots or sensors often share the work of tracking a common state. The isolated Kalman filter of Jung, Luft and Weiss (Autonomous Robots, 2025) saves communication by updating only the units involved in each measurement and approximating their links to everyone else with a correction factor. Its authors conjectured that, whenever the system is observable and controllable, the covariance the filter reports settles to a finite, unique, stable steady state. This candidate shows that the conjecture is false. In a three-unit system where each measurement sees the sum of two states, observable from one round of measurements and controllable, with every local update well defined, the reported variances are proved to satisfy m_k ≥ (5/4)(9/5)^k − 1/4 for dynamics A = 3I, while the centralised Kalman filter keeps every variance at most 3/4. A Perron-root criterion extends the divergence to every connected non-bipartite graph of pair-sum measurements, and extra attenuation or deletion of cross-covariances does not help. Divergence needs unstable dynamics (stable dynamics are proved bounded), but only mildly: computer-assisted interval-arithmetic proofs show that large priors escape for growth factors a² in (1, 1.38], with certified entry from 10¹²I at eight values down to 1 + 10⁻⁸, and that at a² = 21/20 the prior I settles while 10¹²I diverges, so no steady covariance attracts every start. In high-precision numerical tests the actual estimation error stays bounded: the failure is gross pessimism of the reported covariance, not divergence of the estimate. The paper also classifies when every local update is well defined (participant groups overlapping in at most one unit) and proves boundedness for anchored relative measurements. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",

"Mild instability and non-uniqueness (Theorems 6.2, 6.4, Corollaries 6.3, 6.5; computer-assisted): for a² in (1, 1.38] large priors diverge at rate a^(2k) once in a certified region, entered from 10¹²I at eight values down to a² = 1 + 10⁻⁸; at a² = 21/20 the prior I converges while 10¹²I diverges, so there is no globally attracting steady covariance.",
