"oneLine": "An exact, closed-form solution of the two-server fluid dispatching problem of Xie, Hyytiä and Righter: small jobs go to the shorter queue, the size cutoff rises as the queues drift apart, and their conjecture that the relative imbalance always grows is proved; seeded simulations of the random system are numerical evidence only.",
"abstract": "A dispatcher sends each arriving job to one of two identical first-come first-served servers, seeing the job's size and both workloads. Xie, Hyytiä and Righter (ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review 53(4), 2026; arXiv:2509.21693v1) studied a fluid version of this problem, in which a backlog drains deterministically, and conjectured that with two servers the relative workload imbalance increases along every optimal path. This candidate solves their two-server problem exactly. For every nonnegative mean-one size law that is not a point mass and every load ρ < 1, one quadrature of the mean absolute deviation D(h) = E|S − h| gives the optimal value, the optimal state-feedback policy and the optimal path from every start. In words: jobs smaller than a cutoff go to the shorter queue and larger jobs to the longer one; the cutoff depends only on the relative imbalance and rises as the queues drift apart; once one queue is empty it is kept exactly busy. The verification argument covers idling, reflection at empty queues, atoms and unbounded support. It proves the conjecture as posed (sizes with a density), extends it to every nondegenerate law, shows that it fails for deterministic sizes, and proves the optimal workload path unique. In the running example (sizes 1/2 and 3/2, ρ = 3/4) the optimal cost is 33/28 against 3/2 for balanced routing. The heavy-traffic limit is (1 − ρ)V → P̄x², where P̄ is the fraction of jobs, largest first, carrying half the work (P(S ≥ m) at the work median m for continuous laws). This corrects a factor in the source's Proposition 3 and matches exactly the heavy-traffic constant of the CARD policy of Xie, Grosof and Scully; the passage to the stochastic system remains heuristic. Further results are an exact rational controller for finite size laws, certified bounds and an implementable bin policy, Wasserstein stability, an exact enclosure for an infinite-variance Pareto law and the cost of noisy size estimates. In seeded simulations of the stochastic two-server queue — numerical evidence only — the fluid rule used directly beats join-the-shortest-workload by 40–70% for highly variable sizes but fails badly at high load for low-variability sizes; a stabilised version with a safety band repairs this and is competitive with tuned CARD and Dice, and no policy is best in every case. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",

"Exact value and policy: for every nondegenerate mean-one size law and every load ρ < 1, one quadrature of D(h) = E|S − h| gives the optimal value V, the state-feedback policy and the optimal path from every start; the policy sends jobs below a cutoff h = Z⁻¹(z) to the shorter queue, where z is the relative imbalance, and keeps an empty queue exactly busy (Lemma 2, Theorem 3, proof).",
"The Xie–Hyytiä–Righter conjecture: along every optimal path the relative imbalance is nondecreasing, and strictly increasing while both queues are positive and unequal; proved as posed (sizes with a density) and extended to every nondegenerate law; it fails for deterministic sizes, where some optimal paths decrease the imbalance (Theorem 4, Section 7, proof).",
"Uniqueness: the optimal labelled workload path is unique, except for the two mirror-image paths from a tied start, where the closed-loop feedback needs a selection convention; no straight-to-origin segment and no balanced dwelling is ever optimal for nondegenerate laws (Theorem 5, Section 8, proof).",
"Running example (sizes 1/2 and 3/2 equally likely, ρ = 3/4, start (1/2, 1/2)): optimal cost 33/28 against 3/2 for balanced routing, a saving of 3/14 ≈ 21%, and 21/16 for most-work-left; savings of 21–43% against balanced routing and 7–18% against most-work-left across the tabulated laws (exact; quadrature).",
"Heavy traffic: (1 − ρ)V → P̄x² uniformly, where P̄ < 1/2 is the fraction of jobs, largest first, carrying half the work (P(S ≥ m) at the work median for continuous laws); the optimal-to-balanced ratio tends to 2P̄, exactly the CARD-to-least-work-left factor of Xie, Grosof and Scully (for sizes with finite second moment). The source's printed Proposition 3 has an extra factor 2ρ in its axis term; correcting it removes a factor 2 from its heavy-traffic limit (Theorem 10, proof; the stochastic correspondence is heuristic).",
"Computation and approximation: piecewise-quadratic value with an exact rational recurrence for finite size laws; convex-order brackets with a certified-regret bin policy; Wasserstein-Lipschitz value; exact rational enclosure for a Pareto law of shape 1.5 (width 7.0·10⁻⁴) and 1.01; routing on noisy size estimates is equivalent to routing on a coarser law, with an explicit loss bound (Theorems 11 and 14, Propositions 12 and 15, proof and exact computation).",
"Stochastic two-server queue (numerical evidence only): used directly, the fluid rule has 0.31–0.60 of join-the-shortest-workload's mean wait for highly variable sizes, but is 4.3 times worse for exponential sizes at ρ = 0.9 and appears unstable for two-point sizes; the stabilised rule FLUID-S is best or tied in six of twelve cells, tuned Dice in five, CARD is close behind, and no policy dominates."
