"abstract": "Identification, its limits and design consequences in the fixed-parameter diffusion model. When someone responds slowly, is the extra time spent deciding, or on something else, such as seeing the stimulus or making the movement? Diffusion models split each response time into a decision time and a nondecision time. This paper asks when the data determine that split if the nondecision-time distribution is left completely unspecified, as in the D*M method of Verdonck and Tuerlinckx (2016), whose Appendix A assumes the needed uniqueness. For the diffusion model with fixed boundaries, drift and starting point in each condition, and a nondecision time independent of the decision and shared by all conditions and responses, the answer is exact. Everything, including the whole nondecision distribution, is identified if and only if the response-time distributions given each response are not all identical. One condition with a biased starting point suffices, and so do two unbiased conditions differing in boundary separation or drift magnitude. The common design with an unbiased start and stimuli of opposite but equally strong evidence never suffices: a decision process with half the boundary distance and a quarter of the mean decision time, plus a suitable extra delay, fits the data exactly. The paper gives an explicit inversion and the complete set of equivalent boundary separations, and proves three limits on estimation. No estimator is uniformly consistent when the delay spread is unbounded; two unbiased conditions whose response log-odds differ by 2ε need more than 1/(4ε²) trials per condition before any estimator can reliably separate a large boundary from a small one; and if delays may differ between responses, no single condition suffices. Across-trial variability and collapsing boundaries remain open. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",

"Classification (Theorem 1, proof): in the fixed-parameter diffusion model with an arbitrary nondecision distribution independent of the decision and shared by all conditions and responses, all parameters and the delay law are globally identified if and only if some start is biased, or all starts are centred and two pairs (A_j, |v_j|) differ; equivalently, if and only if the conditional response-time laws given each response are not all identical. This resolves, for this model, the injectivity premise in Appendix A of Verdonck and Tuerlinckx (2016).",
"Design consequences (Section 8): one biased-start condition suffices; two unbiased conditions differing in boundary separation or drift magnitude suffice; the standard unbiased ±v design under one boundary setting is exactly non-identified. In the worked example, h = 0.6 with a fixed 0.25 s delay and h = 0.3 with mean delay 0.500 s give the same full data (mean response time 0.583 s in both) with mean decision times 0.333 s and 0.083 s.",
"Identified set (Theorem 2, Corollary 1, proof): when identification fails the feasible half-widths are exactly (0, b_max], with h ≤ b_max ≤ β(s) for every s > 0; under a lower-tail condition on the delay, h = b_max and a single centred condition is identified. Corollary 2 settles the constant-boundary case of the Fudenberg et al. (2020) conjecture.",
"Estimation limits (Theorems 3 and 4, Proposition 1, proof): no uniformly consistent estimator over the identifiable class; unbounded delay spread prevents uniform recovery even far from the degenerate designs; with two unbiased conditions whose log-odds differ by 2ε, at most 1/(4ε²) trials per condition leave every estimator an error probability of at least 1/4. Remark 3, the biased-start analogue, is a conjecture.",
"Response-specific delays (Proposition 2, proof): if the nondecision distribution may differ between responses, no single condition is ever identified; the multi-condition case is open."

A bounded synthetic recovery study (five scenarios, 1,500 and 6,000 trials per condition, 40 replicates) illustrates the estimation limits with one estimator.
