"oneLine": "Hold fixed the rate at which each cultural trait is passed on and change only how bundled learning is: expected trait counts do not change, but every count becomes more variable (convex order), so shortfalls and total loss grow more likely; at the source simulations’ setting, copying 93% of traits per encounter leaves a third of the whole-repertoire variance.",
"abstract": "When people learn from one another, a single encounter can pass on many pieces of knowledge at once, or each piece can travel separately. In the continuous-time model of cultural trait accumulation studied by Wakano, Ohtsuki, Kobayashi and Baake (2026), every trait is copied at an encounter independently with probability b and encounters occur 1/b times as often, so the per-trait transmission rate is fixed. The paper proves that the expected number of traits, and the expected number held by exactly k individuals, do not depend on b, while every such count increases in convex order with b: variance, the expected shortfall below any target and the probability of holding no traits all rise with bundling, and the covariance matrix of the popularity spectrum increases in the positive-semidefinite order. The increase is strict exactly when some inventing site has a directed chain of learning links into the group counted. The same ordering holds for bundled forgetting and, with Poisson innovation, for the discrete-generation Versions 2, 1 and 3 of Wakano and Aoki (2024), who posed the distributional question. Exact moment equations show the effect is modest below the critical learning rate and large above it: at the source simulations’ population of 100, copying 93% of a donor’s traits per encounter leaves a third of the whole-repertoire variance. Threshold probabilities are not ordered in general. Neutral model; no empirical data. AI-assisted, unrefereed candidate; no external peer review, independent reproduction or formal verification is claimed.",
